About us

Our story

More than a decade ago, microbiologist Dr. Jos Seegers already studied a bacterium that is now commonly used in probiotics.

Ten years ago, there was a growing interest in the role of the gut microbiome in maintaining good health and well-being.

At the same time, there were new developments in genomic technology (the technique that allows you to examine gut bacteria. Read more about it here) and Jos became even more fascinated about researching the human gut microbiome.

"We were all curious about people's microbial communities and wanted to make analysis of the gut microbiome available to the public. Thus, together with Derek Butler of BaseClear, I founded MyMicroZoo in 2016."

As the first company in Europe, MyMicroZoo was able to give anyone with an interest insight into what bacteria lived in what proportions in a person's gut. It soon became clear that people wanted to know above all whether they had a "healthy" microbiota. MyMicroZoo listened to this and with today's knowledge can give a good estimate of whether the gut bacteria are balanced or not. (You can read here why it is actually not possible to describe the perfect gut microbiota).

In recent years, scientific research has increasingly shown that there is an important relationship between bacterial groups, health, diet and lifestyle. With the combination of scientific knowledge and MyMicroZoo's database, we are now able to offer clients comprehensive microbiome report, including detailed taxonomic results and recommendations on diet and lifestyle how to improve results.

Our core values

Integrity

We believe in upholding the highest standards of scientific research and providing accurate and unbiased reporting of test results. Our customers can trust us to provide reliable and accurate information.

Empathy

We recognize that every individual is unique and has their own unique concerns and questions. As such, we approach each customer with compassion and understanding, providing personalized support and guidance to help them interpret their results and make informed decisions about their gut health.

Continuous Improvement

We are committed to staying at the forefront of the latest scientific advances and continuously refining our testing processes to ensure that we deliver accurate and informative results to our customers. We believe that by investing in the latest technology and scientific research, we can help our customers achieve optimal gut health and overall well-being.

The Mission

Our company utilizes the latest scientific method of 16S rRNA sequencing to provide customers with valuable insights into the bacterial communities living in their gut. Our primary goal?

"To raise awareness about the crucial role gut bacteria play in health."

We believe that by learning more about their microbial community, people can improve both their physical and mental well-being.

"At MyMicroZoo, we aim to empower people to take control of their gut health."

We achieve this through our gut bacteria test. By first providing insight into the composition of their microbiota, we then recommend adjustments, if necessary, to improve their microbiota.

By expanding our knowledge of the relationship between gut microbiota and human health, we aim to contribute to the scientific community’s ongoing efforts to improve health outcomes through microbiome research.

We are actively researching all potential connections between health and an individual's microbiota composition. As a partner in various research initiatives (such as the GEEF study and the BuikBelang initiative), we are committed to creating new scientific insights and sharing existing knowledge with experts in the field.

In this research, we specifically examine the bacteria that live in our gut.

It is still unknown how best to restore balance in the gut when it becomes disrupted. We know that diet can influence the composition of gut bacteria. But can specific foods improve the composition of gut bacteria? And if the gut bacteria change positively, does this also have a positive effect on our immune system? These are questions we, as researchers, aim to answer through this study.

BuikBelang is an initiative of the Dutch Digestive Foundation (MLDS), the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), and Wageningen University & Research (WUR). BuikBelang's goal is to better understand the functioning of the microbiome. On one hand, to prevent the development of conditions and diseases in and originating from the gut. On the other hand, to better treat diseases and alleviate symptoms.
